Flowable at the Forefront: Exploring Cutting-Edge Business Orchestration, BOAT, and AI Integration during FlowFest’24

OCTOBER 16, 2024

The 2024 edition of Flowable’s annual online gathering, FlowFest, was buzzing with excitement as Agim Emruli, CEO of Flowable, delivered a keynote that painted a vivid picture of the company's path forward and its dedication to pushing the boundaries of business automation.

The talk spanned various topics from intelligent business automation and orchestration to the integration of cutting-edge technologies like AI, RPA, and IDP within the Flowable platform.

Here’s a recap of the top moments from his keynote:

BOAT: The future of business automation

Agim kicked off his keynote by tackling one of the biggest challenges in modern enterprises: The fragmentation of automation tools. Enter BOAT — Business Orchestration and Automation Technologies — a term coined by Gartner to address this exact problem. BOAT seeks to break down the silos between tools like RPA, BPM, and AI, unifying them under one roof for seamless, end-to-end orchestration.

But for Flowable, BOAT is no stranger. The platform has been paving the way for holistic automation for over a decade, ensuring businesses can operate smoothly, reduce costs, and scale efficiently.

Aligned with the importance of connected business orchestration and automation technologies, Agim gave a glimpse into the future of Flowable:

AI-assisted orchestration with Flowable

No conversation about business automation in 2024 would be complete without discussing AI, and Agim Emruli delivered on that front. Flowable’s upcoming AI-assisted process orchestration capabilities promise to add a new layer of intelligence to workflows. It aims for AI to assist in real-time, adapting processes dynamically to meet complex business scenarios and decision-making needs.

1. Smarter content generation and analysis with AI

AI isn’t just enhancing workflows—it’s transforming how businesses handle content. Flowable is integrating AI to automatically generate documents from process cases, analyze incoming communications like emails, and even detect customer sentiment or compliance issues. This not only boosts responsiveness but also makes compliance monitoring and customer relationship management smarter and faster. Exciting news for customers: These capabilities can already be tested by customers in the available early access release. If you are a customer and want to do so, please contact your Customer Success Manager.

2. Accelerated case and process modeling with AI

Flowable’s AI capabilities don’t stop there. AI-assisted case and process modeling is here to accelerate workflow creation. The new feature simplifies the modeling process, making it more efficient while maintaining flexibility. You can still tweak and customize your workflows to fit your needs, but AI gives you a head start.

3. AI copilot: Decision-making made smarter

A notable feature discussed was the AI copilot, which is particularly geared toward enhancing decision-making within processes. This tool is designed to analyze complex patterns and provide recommendations, facilitating more informed decision-making within operational workflows. The AI copilot could dynamically insert necessary steps or tasks based on situational requirements, thereby providing enormous flexibility and responsiveness within structured workflows.

4. Dynamic and non-linear process optimization

Flowable is moving beyond traditional, rigid business process management (BPM) tools with AI-powered dynamic and nonlinear process optimization. This flexibility will allow businesses to adopt more agile and responsive process management practices, which are essential in today's fast-paced business environments.

5. Natural language processing for process design

Building on its low-code/no-code foundation, Flowable expects to incorporate natural language processing to facilitate the process design. This will allow subject matter experts to articulate process requirements or changes in plain language, which can then be converted into process models by the system. This reduced dependency on technical expertise for process modeling is poised to democratize process design and empower a broader range of users.

AI offers us new tools as we transition from deterministic to probabilistic processes. This shift aligns perfectly with our vision, where we’ve always believed that processes cannot be rigid; they must be dynamic and adaptable.

But these AI capabilities are only the start of what’s to come in the Flowable Platform. Exciting enough, Agim dives into more features and capabilities that will shape the future of Flowable:

Embracing connectivity for smarter enterprises

Agim went on to present one of the major highlights: Flowable’s expanded integration capabilities. The platform’s connectors — including service connectors, enterprise connectors, and event-based connectors — enable seamless interactions with APIs and enterprise systems like Salesforce and SAP. This allows businesses to create unified data models and orchestrate complex business processes effortlessly across multiple platforms.

Flowable’s flexible integration options give enterprises the power to choose how and when to integrate with their existing tech stack.

And this is only the beginning.

Agim hinted at even more integration potential on the horizon, including enhanced iPaaS capabilities and deepened integration with Apache Camel. With over 300 components, this ensures Flowable can handle even the most complex enterprise systems.

Even better RPA Integration

Flowable has long been capable of integrating with RPA, but the future holds even more streamlined options. With impending integrations with popular platforms like UiPath and open-source RPA frameworks, businesses will be able to manage their RPA bots directly within Flowable, simplifying processes and boosting operational efficiency.

Automating complexity with intelligent document processing (IDP)

Another keynote highlight was the announcement of Flowable’s new Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) capabilities. Flowable's move towards intelligent document processing involves a partnership with Abby for OCR and data classification technologies, enabling the effortless ingestion and processing of documents within the Flowable Platform. This integration is particularly crucial for content management where entities like cases can be turned into structured documents for various business purposes.

Documents are central to many business processes. Our new IDP integration ensures that documents are processed intelligently, saving time and improving accuracy across the board. There is now no need to switch to an external system to process them.

Whether it’s processing invoices or government forms, this feature automates time-consuming tasks, reducing errors and speeding up operations.

FlowFest'24 made one thing clear: Flowable isn’t just keeping up with the times; it’s shaping the future of business automation end to end.

With its innovative AI features, seamless integrations, and powerful automation tools, Flowable is leading the charge toward smarter, more connected enterprises.
