Flowable: the Agentic Case Platform

Orchestrating change with precision

Here's something most enterprise software companies won't admit: the messy, complicated, judgment-heavy work is the work that matters most. Anyone can automate a straight line. The hard part that actually defines whether your organization thrives or stumbles is everything that doesn't follow a straight line. The work that defines regulated industries like fraud investigations, insurance claims, patient cases, and regulatory reviews, follows the customer's cues. It is dynamic and unfolds with every enquiry. This is case-driven work. It's been the backbone of regulated industries for decades. And it's exactly the kind of work that most AI platforms were not built for.

The promise nobody kept

When AI entered the enterprise, the pitch was compelling: "classify documents faster"; "detect patterns at scale"; "accelerate decisions that used to take days". And it works, yes, but in isolation. And regulated industries can't afford to operate in isolation. Banks, insurers, healthcare providers, government agencies, they've spent decades building systems designed to withstand scrutiny, document every exception, and protect public trust. Those organizations don't just need fast decisions. They need defensible ones. They need to show how a decision was reached. Which policies were applied. Why an exception was made. What happened, in what order, and who approved it. Most AI deployments today can't tell you any of that. The model makes a call. The automation executes a step. But the context, the why, lives in emails, in someone's memory, in a spreadsheet nobody updated. When a regulator asks questions, teams piece the story back together after the fact. That's risk exposure.

What we believe

We believe AI should make regulated organizations more capable and less vulnerable. We believe accountability doesn't disappear when you introduce automation. It becomes more important, and more distributed across people and systems. We believe context is not a nice-to-have. In complex operations, context is the difference between a decision that holds up under scrutiny and one that doesn't. And we believe the right way to introduce AI into enterprise operations is to build the foundation properly first before adding intelligence on top of it.

Where we come from

Flowable was founded in Switzerland. That's not incidental. Switzerland is a country that has managed extraordinary complexity: multiple languages, cross-border finance, strict regulation and became very good at coordination. Swiss professionals didn't simplify their craft by removing moving parts. They mastered the relationships between them. Every action has a purpose. Every movement is accounted for. The system works because the components are synchronized. That's how we think about enterprise operations. Complex work doesn't need to be simplified. It needs to be orchestrated.

Why nobody does it like Flowable

Most AI platforms are built around tasks, steps, tickets. You know the drill: linear flows with a start and an end.

We're built around the case. And that distinction is everything.

A case is not a task. It's a living, structured environment that holds the full context of a piece of work: the data, the policies, the decisions, the approvals, the AI-generated insights, the exceptions, and an unbroken audit trail from start to finish. When circumstances change, the case changes with them. When a judgment call is made, the case records who made it, why, and on what basis. No other platform in the process automation and orchestration space speaks case-centric language natively. Most bolt on case management as an afterthought like a module, an add-on, or a manual workaround. For us, the case is the foundation everything else is built on. And that foundation is built on open standards. BPMN for orchestration. CMMN for dynamic case logic. DMN for decision modeling. This is a deliberate choice and a rare one in this market. Open standards mean your processes and decisions are transparent, auditable, and yours. No proprietary lock-in. No black-box logic. No vendor holding the keys to how your organization operates. You can see exactly how decisions are defined. You can evolve them as regulations change. You can defend them when someone asks. Within this environment, AI agents work with defined permissions doing what you need them to do: classifying documents, detecting anomalies, suggesting next steps, drafting communications. Every action is tied to the case. Every decision is explicit. Human oversight is built in where the work demands it. That's what makes AI trustworthy enough to use in the first place.

Why now

AI is no longer a differentiator in itself. Everybody has access to models and everybody runs experiments. The organizations that win in regulated industries won't be the ones that moved fastest to deploy AI but the ones that deployed it in a way they can stand behind it all. This means decisions anchored in context, actions that are traceable, exceptions that are documented and managed, customer advocacy that becomes the proof that everything works clockwork on their end. It means operations that can move quickly and adapt intelligently while maintaining the accountability that regulated work demands.

Change is constant. Your processes, your people, your systems need to adapt with it. With the right orchestration they do just like clockwork.

That's what we build. Orchestrating change with precision.
